What Kids Hear When We Speak: Imprinting Lessons of Love on Our Child’s Heart

What Kids Hear When We Speak: Imprinting Lessons of Love on Our Child’s Heart

Affirming words from moms and dads are like light switches. Speak a word of affirmation at the right moment in a child’s life and it’s like lighting up a whole roomful of possibilities.

-Gary Smalley

Whether you have one child or many – either your own or those in your daily care – what we are concerned about here is the take away message that our kids get from us. How often do some sloppy, stressed, half-thought out words leave our kids with less than ideal messages? Too often, I confess, and anything, for me, is too often. It has been said that sticks and stones can break your bones but words will never hurt you, yet this isn’t quite true.

Bestselling success author Napoleon Hill says, “Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.” [i] Spiritual teacher Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov also has something to say about words, in this case, a Mother’s words. He says, “influence your child by talking to him while he is asleep. Even if he neither hears nor understands, there are certain laws of the universe which will cause the seeds you plant in him to germinate and bear fruit when he grows up. You can talk to him about the moral laws and all that is good and true and you can be sure that everything you say will be recorded within him.”[ii] What a wonderful idea!

So, it seems pretty clear to me. Good words equals good stuff for kids. Whether your child is older or younger, good messages can benefit their lives. While there are endless good things that you could share with them – and I hope you do – today I’d like to share with you some teachings from The Hearts Center, after all, this is The Hearts Center’s website!

Back in September last year we heard teachings from Lady Nada on spiritual parenting. These included a suggestion of certain things we could say to our children. It is such a wonderful reminder that I’m including it here for your benefit:

A parent can, throughout the entire experience of a child’s journey in life, express over and over to the child: “I love you and God is within you. You are a child of God. You were created in God’s image. God within you is light, love.” Just saying these words will allow this teaching to take hold within their soul so that they will never forget it, whether you whisper the words, share them in intimate moments, expound on them during meals, or intersperse them in your communications when you connect with your children as you work and play together, and as you travel and do other things together. It becomes a part of their reality and they know it with a certitude. They simply know, accept and believe that God is where they are because they were created in God’s image and likeness.[iii]

I’m grateful for this teaching because I really appreciate the reminder and I also love the idea that what we say long enough and often enough – with love – does indeed sink in to the unconscious. I desire to bless my kids forever and leave a lasting impact on them for good. I know you do too. Now, we know one way to do this. Thanks Lady Nada!

Readers, please share your suggestions of what you say – or believe you ought to say – to our lovely kids. Let the inspiration flow into our comment box below!

  • Thank you Nancy, for your kind comment! I agree. It's nice to know the Divine Mother loves us completely. Hopefully we can pass on some (or lots!) of that love to our own (really, God's) kids.

  • Thank you Serena for this lovely message. This is the core of what gives us all our happiness and our Self-confidence--to know we are loved and are a part of all life. Children do hear what we're saying even though it sometimes seems like they don't!
