Kuan Yin known as the Mother of Mercy in the East, has been worshipped by Buddhists for thousands of years. She is the greatest of Bodhisattvas and embodies the totality of compassion for humanity. She removes obstacles, erases past offenses, dispenses mercy, healing and spiritual graces, while always meeting the true inner needs of the soul.

"Hearer of Sounds"

Her shortened Chinese name,  Kuan Yin, means “Hearer of Sounds.” Her full name, Kuan Shih Yin,  means “Hearer of the World’s Sounds.” According to Eastern tradition, when Kuan Yin was about to enter heaven, as she stood on the very threshold, she could hear the cries of humanity. She did not enter but returned to help all who suffer in the earth plane. The term “Hearer of Sounds" can also be translated as “perceiver” or “regarder” of the world’s sounds. She is known in much of Asia as a divine emanation that answers the prayers of those who faithfully call upon her name.

Kuan Yin removes obstacles, erases past offenses, dispenses mercy, healing and spiritual graces, while always meeting the true inner needs of the soul.

Bodhisattva of Compassion

One of her many titles is Bodhisattva of Compassion. Bodhisattva is a Sanskrit word—bodhi meaning "enlightenment"  and sattva translated as "reality" or "existence." A bodhisattva is an enlightened being who has vowed to forgo higher realms and full liberation in order to assist those still struggling in the physical world. A bodhisattva cultivates virtue and pursues his/her spiritual career while on a path of self-sacrifice for the welfare of others and gives compassionate, loving service to humanity and to all sentient life. A bodhisattva (P’u Sa in Chinese) can be a person still in embodiment or a celestial being like Kuan Yin. At this highest transcendent level, the title is mahasattva.

Kuan Yin Mercy Prayer

Kuan Yin is a cross-cultural, nondenominational figure revered by many spiritual and religious traditions around the world. She serves the aspirants of all spiritual heritages and paths. Those who espouse a concept of an impersonal, formless divinity see her as an expression of the essence of compassion, or as a symbol of it. Others who acknowledge a personal Godhead view her as a divine embodiment of this virtue. Some view her as both the impersonal and personal manifestations of divine compassion, with no contradiction. She nurtures the growth of this quality in us through our devotions and our interpersonal relationships with others.

Love Those Who Speak Evil of Thee

Allow the Flame of Mercy to Flow through Your Heart

Blessed Ones,
The light of mercy be upon you. The light of mercy shine within you. The light of mercy guide your pathway. The light of mercy emanate through your heart to all.
If you would truly understand the light of mercy, you must understand the equation of light and darkness. For when the light that is in thee as God's energy is singly focused on the Divine, then how great is that divine light.¹ But if the light that is within thee be turned into the dualistic vision of seeing and witnessing human light and human darkness, then how dark is that light of God that you have allowed not to shine in the divine radiance but through the lens of impure seeing.
When one or another view you from the human rather than from the divine, it is an opportunity for mercy to flow from your heart even through the stream of that one's vision of imperfection in order that over the gaze of their seeing of you as less than God, the flame of mercy, the light of restorative forgiveness may transmute that which within the impure seer remains of the substance that has been projected upon or viewed within you.
Therefore for adepts of the Spirit, it takes great self-mastery not to engage in dual-eyed vision but to allow the stream of vision of the one beholding you in imperfection [to be cleansed]. And through the field of awareness, radiance and love that you hold as the immaculate conceiving of [that one's] very soul, there is the transmutation by and through the flame of forgiveness and mercy of [what that person] do[es] through ignorance. Therefore when one accosts you in any way to declaim the God Spirit within you and to proclaim something of self that is not of God, simply smile and behold the God-reality of that one and hold firmly the beingness of the divine light within both yourself and your friend, or foe, in order that divine resolution and the holy flame of brotherhood and sisterhood may once more be reestablished.
Jesus said to rejoice when men speak ill of thee.² And so you should, knowing that this is an opportunity for self-mastery and for mercy to be yours in the very process of receiving the onslaught of darkness, [and] then, by God's grace, be[ing] the instrument for the transmutation [of that energy] through the joy of mercy, sending it back with pure love, radiant forgiveness and the flame of cosmic mercy.
You see, blessed ones, you often grow more through the trials and tribulations that you undergo by expanding your heart, allowing a greater flow of forgiveness and mercy to be where you are than if you had not had the various challenges that come your way on the spiritual path. For if all men speak well of thee,³ then will you have that something as an irritation within that would move you beyond the comfortability of your present human reality into the divine experience of searching the very heavens for the light-energy to express greater compassion, forgiveness, grace and mercy?
It is always so that the saints are not understood from the human level, for man cannot fully understand the God flame within the spirit of the prophet, the avatar, the voice of the One. For it speaks of truth, of reality. And from the human condition, there can be no complete understanding or resolution, for these may only manifest through God, through divine harmony, through oneness, acceptance and the bliss of beingness.
Therefore love those who speak evil of thee. Forgive those who know not what they do.4 Show compassion even to those who would smite thee with word or with hand. And in turning the cheek,5 allow the flame of mercy to flow through your heart, through your eyes, even as you understand the equation of light and darkness, of beingness and presence, and of the joy of bearing the sins of the world, the karma of humanity and the darkness of those who are temporarily ignorant but who one day will see clearly because you have been an example of radical forgiveness, of total compassion, of complete and humble mercy.
May the love of forgiveness flow through you during this ten-day novena unto all life.May the mercy and forgiveness of a heart one with God be yours to know even as you sing the song of mercy with my angels. I am Kuan Shih Yin, Mother of Mercy, guardian of the heart of the sons and daughters, of the bodhisattvas [of mercy.]
