It has been said that one cannot have his cake and eat it too. Well my friends, if it please you to hear such a story, I will tell you how one student of the Masters was able to do just that, by God’s grace and the magnanimous abundant heart of Lanello.
This story goes back nearly twenty years, to a time when yours truly was serving on the staff of the Summit Lighthouse. It so happened that one summer there was a very large class enrolled for the summer Summit University class, with well over 200 students attending. The size of the class presented a challenging opportunity to accommodate, and so it was that I found myself drafted into kitchen duty for the summer.
Rising at five in the morning and working until nine or ten at night, the summer passed very swiftly, and the class was nearing its end. One night, I was preparing for my final duties, which were to sweep and mop the floors of the kitchen and food preparation areas. As was the custom late in the evening, not a soul was around as I grabbed the broom and started to sweep.
Now this particular day happened to be my birthday, and I must confess, that as I swept and mopped the floors, I was not feeling particularly joyful. In fact, I remember thinking to myself that this was just great. Here I was on my birthday, mopping the floor without so much as a piece of birthday cake to eat!
And so it was, thinking in this manner, that I looked up from my mopping straight into the large portrait of Mark Prophet, replete with white tuxedo and white bow tie, which hung from the wall in the food preparation area. I began to think to myself that I sure hoped Lanello did not hear that!
As the hour passed my duties were nearly complete. I went to put away the broom and mop and heard the side door of the kitchen open. As it was somewhat unusual for anyone to be in the kitchen this late, I went to the door and looked to see who might be there. Much to my surprise, a wonderful chela from Australia, and her six year old grandson who lived with her by King Arthurs Court were walking straight toward me carrying two plates full of baked goodies!
As we met, she informed me that she and her grandson were sitting in their home and suddenly got the urge to bake some goodies and bring them to the kitchen! As my heart filled with joy, I remembered the beautiful portrait of Lanello with his smiling eyes. It was then that she spoke the words I will always remember. She said, “Of course, they are sugar free!”
And so, I would offer this story today, as an example of how the Masters do look over and care for us, and provide us with the abundance we require, modified according to God’s holy will of course! And thus ends the story of the student who had his cake and got to eat it too.
