During the class, Ghandi was used as an example of someone who effected change and freed India from the grip of the British power elite. He used ahimsa or nonviolent resistance as a tool to pry open the grip. But he also used the spinning wheel. He taught his people how to plant their own cotton and make their own thread and clothing from it using a spinning wheel rather than buy the expensive inported clothing from Great Britain. This was a key tool in breaking the British textile industry's monopoly in India. If we can become self-sufficient, we too can live independent of the corrupt economic system of the power elite.
