Kuan Yin known as the Mother of Mercy in the East, has been worshipped by Buddhists for thousands of years. She is the greatest of Bodhisattvas and embodies the totality of compassion for humanity. She removes obstacles, erases past offenses, dispenses mercy, healing and spiritual graces, while always meeting the true inner needs of the soul.

"Hearer of Sounds"

Her shortened Chinese name,  Kuan Yin, means “Hearer of Sounds.” Her full name, Kuan Shih Yin,  means “Hearer of the World’s Sounds.” According to Eastern tradition, when Kuan Yin was about to enter heaven, as she stood on the very threshold, she could hear the cries of humanity. She did not enter but returned to help all who suffer in the earth plane. The term “Hearer of Sounds" can also be translated as “perceiver” or “regarder” of the world’s sounds. She is known in much of Asia as a divine emanation that answers the prayers of those who faithfully call upon her name.

Kuan Yin removes obstacles, erases past offenses, dispenses mercy, healing and spiritual graces, while always meeting the true inner needs of the soul.

Bodhisattva of Compassion

One of her many titles is Bodhisattva of Compassion. Bodhisattva is a Sanskrit word—bodhi meaning "enlightenment"  and sattva translated as "reality" or "existence." A bodhisattva is an enlightened being who has vowed to forgo higher realms and full liberation in order to assist those still struggling in the physical world. A bodhisattva cultivates virtue and pursues his/her spiritual career while on a path of self-sacrifice for the welfare of others and gives compassionate, loving service to humanity and to all sentient life. A bodhisattva (P’u Sa in Chinese) can be a person still in embodiment or a celestial being like Kuan Yin. At this highest transcendent level, the title is mahasattva.

Kuan Yin Mercy Prayer

Kuan Yin is a cross-cultural, nondenominational figure revered by many spiritual and religious traditions around the world. She serves the aspirants of all spiritual heritages and paths. Those who espouse a concept of an impersonal, formless divinity see her as an expression of the essence of compassion, or as a symbol of it. Others who acknowledge a personal Godhead view her as a divine embodiment of this virtue. Some view her as both the impersonal and personal manifestations of divine compassion, with no contradiction. She nurtures the growth of this quality in us through our devotions and our interpersonal relationships with others.

Lotus Buds of Mercy Deposited within Your Spiritual Body

A Roseate Sphere of Cosmic Consciousness within the Atmosphere of the Earth

Dearest Hearts of Mercy,

I come in answer to your prayers this day. And through an intimate conversation with your soul, I offer my heart to you. Lotus buds of mercy, which I deposit within the deepest resources and recesses of your spiritual body, are placed there to bring, through the tender light of their essence, the flowering of a greater level of mercy within you for the benefit of sentient beings and for the blessing, through your own bodhisattva path, of life in these realms of light.

I also bless and ensoul the statues offered this day1 by precious heartfriends who love me so and who have offered both the gift of this tangible representation of my being and the greater gift of their hearts' love, their tender regard for life, and their desire to be that mercy flame for all. You see, the beads that I hold2 are symbols of the buds of light that I shower upon souls as the graces of God's mercy. The bead and the bud, the seed, are similar in name; and they signify the opening of the heart and the flowering of mercy at the seed level of identity within the eternal nature of being.

When you see the plight of mankind as it is outpictured in all manner of illusory manifestations, you may ask, Where does mercy abide in this world? Mercy abides within the heart uplifted to the Divine, within the very core of the lifestreams of those who desire to be of service, to be mercy light in their active lives and in that which they do unseen by humanity through a virtuous approach to everything, through a tenderness and a divine regard for even the tiniest of creatures, the subtlest of forces that play and dance throughout the cosmic spheres at the behest of the great Lord of Love of all.

Each time you offer yourself through a merciful act, a merciful thought or feeling, a merciful word whereby the simple graces of the Spirit are bestowed through that portion of God's eternal love with which you have aligned yourself, I am there, smiling through the flower of your being and sharing the aroma of mercy to encompass life with the presence of peace, new possibility and inner joy. In this the world is reborn in the new image and likeness in which we, the bodhisattvas, desire to see it be created. And each of you, as a tendril within the bouquet of light of the holy Mother of all, may represent that feminine touch, that divine design whereby a new brooding spirit of motherhood may again and again give birth to a new world of mercy here where you live and move and have your being.

I create now within the atmosphere of the Earth a roseate sphere of cosmic consciousness intertwined with many devic patterns of perfection whereby these holy virtues may be embellished within the lives of the sons and daughters of God through their prayers, their holy offerings of their inner Selfhood, their own resourcefulness, and the simplicity of those tender words of mercy.

Rainbow light of mercy, shine forth now within all dimensional planes of being and within the life of every lifestream evolving here! Universal light of mercy, shine forth now and deliver to each soul what is essential for its accelerated evolution in light in order to manifest its perfect destiny of oneness with the Divine!

O joyous representation of God's great mercy light, manifest through the lives of the children who will lead the way to a new world of beauty and grace through their laughter, through their joy, through the simple graces of their hearts and the sunshine of their beings, raising all in love!

O mankind, be merciful to one another, be reverent toward all life! And enjoy a new spiritual integrity through oneness with your Source and through your effectual lives glorifying God, magnifying the Lord in so many beautiful and gentle ways through which mercy may grow and may bestow upon all light, light, light.

I now set the seal of my approval upon my Missives of Mercy,3 which I ask to be presented to me in book form early next year. For it is in this time that the world will require my touch, my kiss, my breath as an investment of a mother's love so that all of God's children may grow up unto their full Sun-stature to be glorified and virtuous in that eternal light.

[Kuan Yin chants the AH in a moving melody for 44 seconds.]

I am with you in the early dawn hours of your contemplation upon your inner being and, through new mindfulness, your discovery of who you are within the one eternal One, whom we adore.

            I thank you.

1. Two statues of Kuan Yin were recently donated to The Hearts Center and were placed on the altar before the service during which Kuan Yin gave this HeartStream.

2. “Beads that I hold.” In Buddhist art, Kuan Yin is often depicted holding a strand of beads that is said to represent all living beings. The turning of the beads symbolizes her leading them out of the rounds of suffering and rebirth and into nirvana.
